One World Trade Center to be lit up with trans colours for Trans Day of Visibility
One World Trade Center, at the site of 9/11, is lighting up with the colours of the transgender flag for the first time, to mark Transgender Day of Visibility.
The official Twitter account for OWTC tweeted the announcement that the iconic building would be lit up with the colours of the trans flag, blue pink and white.
Finished in 2013, the sixth tallest building in the world was erected to rebuild the towers of the World Trade Center which were destroyed in the September 11 2001 attacks.
International Trans Day of Visibility is marked on 31 March, in events around the world.
The day was created in 2009 by Rachel Crandall of Transgender Michigan, who said at the time that there weren’t enough LGBT+ days specifically for trans rights.
According to the tweet by OWTC, the building would be lit up, using the hashtags #tdov and #TransDayOfVisibility.
The OWTC building was also lit up with a rainbow last year in memory of those lost in the Orlando Pulse massacre.
Events are taking place around the world to mark the day, and to encourage people to be better allies to the trans community.
In the UK, it was announced that Stephanie Hirst, a trans radio and TV presenter, would become the voice of Channel 4 to mark International Transgender Day of Visibility.
The presenter will follow in the footsteps of Amy Stanning, who Channel 4 made the first ever trans continuity announcer in the UK last year, on the same day.
