Labour forced to delay conference due to Britney concert
Britney Spears isn’t known for her politics, but now she’s had a major impact on a party conference.
A clash between Israeli Labor’s leadership contest and Britney’s concert has caused a headache for the politicians.
Both events were arranged for July 3rd in neighbouring venues at Tel Aviv’s Exhibition Grounds conference and concert space.
However Labor got a surprise when they tried to arrange their event security – there was none left.
Britney had already taken almost all of the security officials and ushers available in the Israeli capital, forcing Labor to change their leaderships plans.
The awkward coincidence has forced the leader of the Israeli opposition, Isaac Herzog, to postpone Labor’s primary elections by 24 hours.
A Labor party spokesperson told the Times of Israel that the decision to postpone would “make it easier for people to reach polling stations”, and, presumably, tp attend the Britney concert.
They also confirmed that there had been “a difficulty in recruiting security guards”.
Labor, which supports the introduction of same-sex marriage for Israel, is yet to confirm full details of their delayed event.
Although marriage equality is yet to be introduced in the middle eastern country, the country has taken some steps toward the move.
The spouses of Israelis who have tied the knot in countries where same-sex marriage is legal may soon be able to claim Israeli citizenship at the same speed as straight couples.
Same-sex spouses were forced to wait up to seven years and would generally only be granted permanent residency rather than citizenship under the old rules.
The government’s chief legal adviser, Avichai Mandelblit, has issued an instruction to Israel’s Interior Ministry to now consider applications under the same terms, according to reports.
Same-sex marriages performed abroad are already recognised in Israel for some purposes.
