This New Zealand theatre has the best gender-neutral bathroom sign
A theatre in South New Zealand is being celebrated because of a new bathroom sign.
The Regent Theatre in Dunedin has moved towards a more gender inclusive bathroom by displaying a non-binary sign that welcomes people of all abilities, gender and even aliens.
The theatre is pretty nonchalant about who uses the bathroom, as long as they are hygienic and wash their hands.
Sarah Anderson, the director of the theatre, thought up the brilliant sign which was installed last week in the venue which seats 1650 people.
The marketing manager at the theatre, Hannah Molloy, told the Otago Daily Times that the venue wanted to make their customers feel “relaxed”.
She said: “We like people to be relaxed and that’s the point of having the sign.
“It takes any anxiety away for people who might feel pressured into going into toilets specified for one gender, or another, when they don’t necessarily relate to that gender.”
She added that locals have had a brilliant response to the sign which is there to make people “feel more comfortable and safe”.
“People are delighted … we haven’t had any negative feedback at all. Clearly there is a demand for it – society is ready,” Molloy added.
The sign comes after popular review site Yelp added the option of a gender-neutral bathroom finder amid numerous anti-trans laws being passed.
Some gender neutral bathrooms have been defaced, including in the Rhode Island School of Art university, where a swastika was drawn using faeces.
