This parent is protesting the use of gender neutral pronouns in Universities
A parent is protesting the use of gender neutral pronouns by Universities after Brown University referred to his daughter using they/them pronouns.
A parent wrote to James Freeman, a writer for the Wall Street Journal, complaining about a letter he received from the University.
The parent said he would bid Brown “good riddance” because “only left-wing extremists are welcome”.
“Our daughter has always been clear what her biological gender and identity is — she’s a woman,” he insisted.
Freeman wrote about the letter in an op-ed for the paper and explained that the parent had become distressed when receiving a letter from Brown University which commended the daughter for “their” contributions and hard work.
A voice mail was also reportedly left on the man’s voicemail that was gender neutral.
Freeman took it upon himself to help the parent protest against the use of the language, and slammed Logan Powell, the Dean of Admissions, for not being “familiar with pronouns”.
“We’ve read about the literacy crisis in the U.S. but would not have guessed that the problem extends to Ivy League administrators,” Freeman wrote.
Brown University has stood by the policies, and defended it by pointing out that many newsrooms and other organisations had begun to use more inclusive language that did not discriminate on the basis of gender.
Brian clark, a spokesperson for the university, said that the admissions office “typically refers to applicant either by first name or by using they/their pronouns.
“While the grammatical construction may read as unfamiliar to some, it has been adopted by many as a gender-inclusive option”.
