Lady Gaga’s mum to be honoured at ‘gay Olympics’
Lady Gaga’s mother will be honoured in the opening ceremony during the World OutGames later this month.
The World OutGames Opening Ceremonies will be held on May 27, marking the start of the 10-day LGBT sporting event.
Athletes, participants, thought leaders and spectators from as many as 59 countries are expected to attend the festivities.
As part of the opening ceremonies, Lady Gaga’s mother Cynthia Germanotta will be honoured with the Champion Award, presented by the University of Miami Health System.
Mrs Germanotta, 63, is the President and Co-founder of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation, which promotes LGBT inclusiveness.
Working with leading researchers and young people themselves, the foundation strives to build kinder communities, improve mental health resources and create more positive environments – online and offline.
Cynthia Germanotta, president of Born This Way Foundation, said: “I am honoured to accept this award as a symbol of the progress we are making towards our goal of building a kinder and braver world.
“We share the World OutGames Miami’s spirit of inclusiveness and the belief that communities will be strongest when we embrace each other’s differences and celebrate what makes each of us unique.”
Born This Way Foundation, led by Lady Gaga and Cynthia Germanotta, was created in 2012 to help create a kinder and braver world by supporting youth wellness and empowerment.
Ivan Cano, CEO of World OutGames Miami, said: “World OutGames is honoured to present Cynthia with the Champion Award for her amazing work done through Born This Way Foundation.”
He added: “This award recognition signifies our overall mission to foster unity and inclusiveness and it sends a strong message as the kick-off to this historic sports, culture and human rights event.”
The Opening Ceremonies will feature dance music legend Kristine W, American Idol singer David Hernandez and Latin musician Tito Puente Jr.
World OutGames Miami will feature a plethora of sporting events including swimming, soccer, track, dance, volleyball and more.
The OutGames festival period includes the 4th Global LGBTQI Human Rights Conference, which will offer a world view of human rights with representation from Brazil, Cuba, Canada, Miccosukee Reservation, St. Lucia, Thailand, Tonga, Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Venezuela.
Lady Gaga surprised fans last month by debuting new song The Cure during her live set at Coachella.
She has since released a lyric video for the song, which you can watch below:
Lady Gaga’s inclusive hit Born This Way recently had its pro-LGBT lyrics cut when it was played during the BBC’s Let’s Sing & Dance For Comic Relief.
The lyrics “No matter gay, straight, or bi/Lesbian, transgendered life” were axed from their version.
The broadcaster said in an official statement: “Born This Way by Lady Gaga performed by The One Show reporters on ‘Let’s Sing And Dance For Comic Relief’ was shortened purely for length.”
