Stephen Colbert doesn’t regret ‘homophobic’ joke about Donald Trump
Stephen Colbert has said he “doesn’t regret” what many have said was a homophobic joke about Donald Trump.
In a stinging monologue on Monday’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the comedian laid into the president.
The insult-laden diatribe followed Trump abruptly ending an interview with CBS News anchor John Dickerson on Monday after the reporter grilled him on his wiretapping claims.
Colbert laid into the President, saying he attracts “more skinheads than free Rogaine” and telling him there were “more people marching against you than cancer”.
He added: “You talk like a sign language gorilla that got hit in the head.”
And then, he made the joke which led to the rapid emergence of the hashtag #FireColbert on Twitter.
“In fact,” he said, “the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s cock holster.”
On the Wednesday night edition of his programme, Colbert addressed the controversy.
He explained: “Now if you saw my monologue Monday, you know that I was a little upset at Donald Trump for insulting a friend of mine.
“So at the end of that monologue, I had a few choice insults for the president in return.”
Colbert added: “I don’t regret that. He, I believe, can take care of himself. I have jokes; he has the launch codes. So, it’s a fair fight.”
And the comedian, who depicted Putin as gay after the Russian president made it illegal to do so in his country, said: “I would do it again”.
However, he clarified: “I would change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be.
“I’m not going to repeat the phrase, but I just want to say for the record, life is short, and anyone who expresses their love for another person, in their own way, is to me, an American hero.
“I think we can all agree on that. I hope even the president and I can agree on that.
“Nothing else. But that.”
Maybe Colbert shouldn’t be so sure on that front, since Trump is expected to sign an anti-LGBT+ religious liberty executive order today.
