FCC to investigate Stephen Colbert over ‘homophobic’ Trump joke
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is set to investigate remarks made by Stephen Colbert about Donald Trump that have been deemed homophobic.
Chairman Ajit Pai confirmed that the FCC had received a number of complaints about the comments Colbert made on The Late Show.
The episode which aired on Monday evening will be investigated after Colbert said “The only thing [Donald Trump’s] mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s cock holster”.
A number of people took to Twitter to accuse Colbert as “homophobic” for the line.
Some people calling the comedian a “scumbag” and many more using the hashtag #FireColbert.
He also said the President attracts “more skinheads than free Rogaine” and told Trump that there were “more people marching against you than cancer”.
Colbert added: “You talk like a sign language gorilla that got hit in the head.”
Pai explained that they will review the clip in coordination with laws set out by the Supreme Court.
He said: “I have had a chance to see the clip now and so, as we get complaints, and we’ve gotten a number of them, we are going to take the facts that we find and we are going to apply the law as it’s been set out by the supreme court and other courts and we’ll take the appropriate action.”
“We have received a number of complaints.
“We’ll follow the standard operating procedures, as we always do, and make sure we evaluate what the facts are and apply the law fairly and fully,” Pai added.
If the joke is found to be “indecent” then the show’s network, CBS, could face a fine.
The comedian, who’s last controversy involved depicting Putin as gay after the Russian president made it illegal in his country, said: “I would do it again”.
However, he clarified: “I would change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be.
