Anti-LGBT group accuses campaigners of ‘bullying’ for protesting event
The director of an Australian Christian group which has fought to keep the āgay panic defenceā on the books has accused LGBT campaigners of ābullyingā for demonstrating at an event.
Lyle Shelton, the boss at the Australian Christian Lobby, said that ābullying tacticsā were used by members of the LGBT community at a seminar against the Safe Schools program.
The Safe Schools program, which was commissioned up by the former Labor government, launched in 2014 and teaches about LGBT issues in schools in a bid to battle bullying.
The program, which the ACL has been strongly opposed to, was the subject of the seminar.
But after 30 ārainbow political activistsā picketed the event, Shelton claims that the ACL has been ābulliedā.
Shelton claims that the protesters had stopped members of the public from entering the seminar.
āThe intolerance of those leading the LGBTI political movement is fast-becoming one of the biggest threats to basic freedoms Australians have taken for granted for 200 years,ā he said.
Shelton also claims that despite 100 people being able to get into the seminar, a further 70 werenāt able to get in because of the protesters.
John Whitehall spoke at the event. The University of Western Sydney professor has in the past referred to gender dysphoria as a āfadā.
On Twitter, one supporter claimed that the protesters had āblockadedā the event.
Shelton has in the past refused to apologise for comparing gay people to Nazis.
The Safe Schools program was censored earlier this year after consistent opposition by the ACL.
But Shelton was pretty upset when a rally his organisation had organised included open invitations which were flooded with fake RSVPs by LGBT activists.
