‘Bachelorette’ contestant probably regrets making this transphobic ‘joke’
A contestant on the upcoming season of ‘Bachelorette’ has already got himself in hot water over a transphobic ‘joke’ he made on Twitter.
Bryce Powers, a contestant on the upcoming season of ‘The Bachelorette’ spoke about his biggest fear of the woman he will meet on the show.
His response? “The chick is actually a dude.”
Many have taken to Twitter to criticise Powers for his “joke”, saying that his words are transphobic.
Tweets suggested that his words perpetuate the idea that trans women are men trying to hide as women or that there is something deceitful in living their true selves.
Trans actress Jen Richards took to Twitter to criticise Powers, saying: “Dear Bryce, on behalf of trans women I can assure you: none of us want to date your bland preppy 1980’s teen movie villain rhombus ass.”
RuPaul’s Drag Race star Sharon Needles also added: “Bryce from the Bachelorette’s biggest fear is trans women who are attempting to conceal their birth sex. I see why yer single, douche bag.”
But Powers doesn’t seem too bothered by the controversy.
Since it kicked off the only thing he has tweeted is a photo of himself wearing a new firefighting uniform.
The Australian version of the Bachelorette this year asked for both men and women to apply to win the hand of a leading lady.
Two female competitors on The Bachelor in Australia, Megan Marx and Tiffany Scanlon, started going out with each other after meeting on the show.
But LGBT people have never been able to compete to win the heart of a same-sex partner on the reality programme – which is all about to change.
The news comes a week after it was revealed that Blind Date, the hit British dating show, would feature LGBT pairings for the first time.
