The SNL cast sung Hallelujah as the top US politicians and it’s our favourite thing
The cast of SNL have returned to mock American politics once again, and this time might be our favourite.
Last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live saw a large portion of the cast appear on stage as different figureheads in American politics to perform Hallelujah in a cold open.
The sketch reflects on Kate McKinnon singing her own rendition of the Leonard Cohen song as Hillary Clinton in a post-election character departure.
Alec Baldwin, playing Donald Trump, kicks off the scene sat at a piano and launches into the song.
He is quickly joined by Kellyanne Conway, played by Kate McKinnon and Mike Pence, played by Beck Bennett.
Eric Trump (Alex Moffat), Donald Trump Jr. (Mikey Day) and Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders (Aidy Bryant) are next to appear on the stage, alongside a grim reaper (yes, really) in the rendition.
The group is rounded off with the appearance of Melania Trump (Cecily Strong) and Ivanka Trump (Scarlett Johansson), however, Melissa McCarthy was not there to play Sean Spicer.
Although it is not the usual biting jokes that the show directs at Trump and his administration, it still makes a few hilarious references to his presidency so far.
The song finishes with Baldwin stating that he “isn’t giving up because he didn’t do anything wrong”, although “he can’t speak for these people” he said while gesturing to the group surrounding him.
The line echoed McKinnon’s Clinton rendition which aired in November when she finished the song seemingly in tears and said: “I’m not giving up, and neither should you.”
The cold open marked the season finale, as well as Baldwin’s last appearance as Trump on SNL.
The comedy sketch show has seen somewhat of a revival this season with its political characters.
Most notably, Melissa McCarthy has earned herself a reputation for doing a brilliant impression of Press Secretary Sean Spicer a number of times on the season.
Recently, McCarthy teamed up with Baldwin as Spicer and Trump in an explosive sketch which ended in an affair.
As well as her impressions of Hillary Clinton, Kate McKinnon took on the roles of Kellyanne “couch legs” Conway and recently appointed General Attorney Jeff Sessions.
