Supergirl’s lesbian couple Alex and Maggie take their biggest step yet – and fans are ecstatic
Supergirl’s lesbian couple took a huge step forward in the show’s season finale – and fans are delighted.
Alex Danvers and Maggie Sawyer – surely one of the best same-sex relationships on TV – had once again gone through hell to save the world.
Alien invaders from Daxam threatened to destroy humankind, and though Supergirl saves the day with Lena Luthor’s invention, an atmospheric change means her Daxamite boyfriend Mon-El has to leave Earth.
In one of the final scenes of the season, Alex approaches her sister to ask what she needs to get through this heartbreak.
Through her tears, Kara tells Alex to treasure Maggie.
“Just…never let her go. Okay?”
She flies off, just as Maggie comes up behind Alex and holds her.
“She’ll be okay,” she tells her girlfriend.
“I hope so,” comes the reply from Alex.
“Hey. I know the Danvers girls. You don’t break easy -”
“Marry me.”
“Excuse me?”
“Seriously. Marry me. Please?
There was no spoken response from Maggie, but she did produce the biggest smile you’ve ever seen.
The relationship between Alex, a secret government agent who was in the closet, and police detective Maggie Sawyer has provided an important example of representation for LGBT fans.
Alex came out earlier this season in a story arc praised by fans for its realism.
And three weeks ago, after Alex almost died during a kidnapping, they said “I love you” to each other.
Floriana Lima, who plays Maggie, has said the pair has been taken aback by the reaction to the couple, and the GLAAD Media Award nomination they got last month.
She said the nod was “just so amazing, and wow, surreal for us.
“I think what’s important is just to show this as a relationship and not to focus fully on the fact that these are two gay women,” she explained.
“We want to treat it and give it as much thought as any other relationship, right, but also be mindful that we are representing a community that needs more representation.
“We want to get it right, and we want to really think things through.”
Fans were pretty excited about the proposal, and extremely emotional.
There were a lot of posts written in all-caps – understandably.

@DanaPiccoli Most other shows kill off lesbians before the 2nd date I’m totally fine with a Sanvers proposal and wedding! They both survived the season!
