Ellen DeGeneres returns to stand-up for Netflix comedy special
Ellen DeGeneres will be headlining a stand-up special for Netflix.
15 years after the comic-turned-TV host last performed a stand-up, she announced her comedy return as part of a deal with Netflix.
She said: “It has been 15 years since I did a stand-up special. 15 years! I’m writing it now, I can’t wait.
“I’ll keep you posted when and where I’m gonna shoot my Netflix special.
“I’m excited to do it; I’m excited for [everyone] to see it.”
Netflix said: “As a beloved television icon and entertainment pioneer, Ellen DeGeneres’ distinctive comic voice has resonated with audiences from her first stand-up comedy appearances through her work today on television, in film, and in the literary world. Ellen DeGeneres has made a home for herself in daytime with her hit syndicated talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”
The deal was teased with a Twitter exchange.
The streaming giant wrote: “Looks like it’s been 15 years since you did a stand-up special, @TheEllenShow. How about one for Netflix?”
She responded: “Let me think about it. Ok I’m in.”
Ellen addressed the news on her show.
She said: “Earlier this week I got a tweet from Netflix… the good news is, they asked if I was interested in doing a stand-up special.
“I said, I’m going to have to think about it, and 30 seconds later I said yes.”
She added: “Now each one of you, you get to ‘Netflix and chill’ with me. How about that?”
Ellen DeGeneres recently celebrated 20 years since she came out.
The iconic comic came out on Oprah, as well as in her sitcom, Ellen, back in 1997.
She has now recorded a very special anniversary show looking back at two decades since her coming out, to be joined by Oprah Winfrey and the original cast of the show.
An incredible 42 million people tuned into to watch Ellen come out, one of the most watched TV moments of the decade.
After the coming out many religious groups began to protest outside their local ABC stations to take Ellen off air.
