Two major female characters are getting intimate in Game of Thrones trailer
A trailer for Game of Thrones Season 7 teases a lesbian kiss – and it could seriously upset the power balance of the show.
The latest trailer for the fantasy series dropped this week, and included a blink-and-you’ll miss it scene of two women kissing.
Unless you’re a Game of Thrones geek we’ll forgive you for not recognising the two faces straight away, but we’ve got you covered.
The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it snippet features Yara Greyjoy and Ellaria Sand, two characters who may hold significant keys to power.
Yara Greyjoy, who was revealed to be a lesbian last season, was most recently seen in Mereen, agreeing to an alliance with everyone’s favourite mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen.
Greyjoy pledged the Iron Fleet to form part of Daenerys’ massive invasion force, giving a boost to her bid to claim the Iron Throne.
We had speculated that the show might embrace Daenerys’ bisexuality, which featured heavily in the books, by connecting her to Yara.
However, the clip suggests she has her sights set on a different ruler – Ellaria Sand.
In another plot you might have forgotten from last season, scorned widow Ellaria Sand – the de facto ruler of Dorne – joined up with the Targaryens to seek revenge for the death of her lover Prince Oberyn Martell.
The character was last seen in Dorne (AKA the land where Everyone Is Bisexual), attempting to forge an alliance with the surviving members of the House of Tyrell on behalf of Daenerys.
The trailer apparently confirms that Dorne has joined the invasion, and the two women could be one hell of a couple, bringing two of the seven kingdoms with them.
However, Yara ought to be a bit more careful before smooching Ellaria Sand – her kisses tend to be deadly.
The new ruler of Dorne dispatched Princess Myrcella Lannister with a kiss way back in Season 5, using lipstick coated in poison to murder the royal.
She also murdered Dorne’s ruler Prince Doran for getting in her way. Could Yara be next on her hit list?
Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark on the series, also says she wants her character to be bisexual.
Asked who her character should end up with, she said: “Judging by Sansa’s relationship with Margaery… probably Margaery.”
Margaery was promptly killed off.
Game of Thrones returns on July 16.
