Doctor Who star Matt Lucas says Margaret Thatcher was a ‘murderer’ for introducing Section 28
Section 28 was introduced 30 years ago under the Thatcher government
Matt Lucas has labelled former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher a “murderer” in a new documentary.
The remarks were in a response to her record on LGBT rights while in government.
The actor and comedian, who plays Nardole in Doctor Who, made the claims in a new film to mark 50 years since homosexuality was decriminalised in England and Wales.
In the film, 50 Years Legal, due to air on Sky in July, Lucas says: “I regard Margaret Thatcher and the people who created and endorsed Clause 28 as murderers.”
He added: “They prevented young men from learning how not to contract AIDS and die.
“You have to remember, there was a moment when there wasn’t Clause 28 and then it came in.
“It wasn’t something that they inherited, it was something they initiated. Fuck ’em.”
The former Little Britain star also reveals how his family reacted to him coming out.
He says: My brother wasn’t delighted.
“When I told him I was gay, he went, ‘Oh great…’
“As if I’d put in the coloured clothes with the white clothes.”
Lucas previously starred as “the only gay in the village” Daffyd on Little Britain, often dressing up in leather and other camp outfits.
“I lost my hair when I was six so the fact that I looked different was made apparent to me from a very early age.
“People always commented on it so I think my way of dealing with it through the years was to disguise myself.
“It felt like a safe thing to do.
“Oddly, when I’m in character, I tend to deliberately make myself look even worse. There’s no vanity in comedy, especially in this country.”
