Cher announces musical based on her life is coming to Broadway
Cher has announced a musical based on her life.
The legendary gay icon today announced the long-awaited project, which was rumoured to be in production earlier this year.
Taking to Twitter and employing liberal use of emojis, she wrote: “Just got off phone w/Writer & Director of musical. There Will [be] performance in THEATRE WITH ACTORS,DANCERS,SINGERS!! IT’ll [be] ON BROADWAY 2018”.
Musical theatre writer Rick Elice, who penned the book for Jersey Boys, has been linked to the project previously.
He told the New York Post: “They may pack me in a van and have me carted away when they see what I’ve done with her life.
“Or I’ll start doing what Arthur Laurents always said about musicals, ‘They don’t get written. They get rewritten!’.
“Her life is so wildly documented. There is not much we don’t know about her. I was not a fanatical Cher fan, but when I started working on this show, I was surprised at how much I knew.”
The show will reportedly take the audience through the star’s life as as child, her marriage to Sonny Bono and then through her solo success.
The musical, which has not been officially confirmed for a Broadway debut, will likely feature Cher hits including ‘I Got You Babe,’ ‘Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves,’ ‘Take Me Home,’ ‘Believe’ and ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’.
In the past year the 71-year-old has become increasingly outspoken in her criticism of Donald Trump, whom she tweets about using the toilet emoji.
Last year she warned Trump would turn back time for LGBT rights.
The singer said: ” I fear for you because I know what they will try to do – they [Trump and Pence] will try to turn back every clock, they will try to take back every one of your rights.
“He doesn’t mean we want to ‘Make America Great Again.’ He means: ‘We want to make America straight and white’.”
“I just think he’s a f***ing idiot. I just wish he would fall off the face of the Earth.”
She recently teased that she’s working on new material for an unannounced album.
She tweeted: “Just walked out of the studio.
“Had a blast [sic], put two songs down. Was dead from fittings. Wish I could go in jeans and high heels, but shade is cold [sic] burr.”
The following night, the 70-year-old suggested she had brought her song tally up to four, by recording a further two tunes.
The album will be a follow-up to 2013’s Closer To Truth.
