HRC president Chad Griffin blasted Ivanka Trump for Pride tweets
Chad Griffin, the president of LGBT organisation Human Rights Campaign has called Ivanka Trump out for her Pride tweets.
The President’s daughter and advisor used the social platform to come out in support of Pride month earlier this week.
“I am proud to support my LGBTQ friends and the LGBTQ Americans who have made immense contributions to our society and economy,” she wrote.
The tweets caused outrage online as the president opted to ditch White House celebrations of Pride Month.
Griffin has now also attacked the tweets, insisting that the statement is more “shocking” than supportive.
Talking on POLITICO’s podcast, Griffin explained that the tweets seemed to be a “PR attempt to try to show this president as perhaps being a bit more compassionate than he actually is”.
The HRC president explained that the tweets did little to show Trump’s support of the LGBT community and that she would have to do much more than that.
“I am proud to support my LGBTQ friends and the LGBTQ Americans who have made immense contributions to our society and economy.”
“I would say we need your voice and we need it to be loud,”
“An ally is not someone who tells people that they’re an ally. An ally is not someone who sends a tweet to show that they’re an ally. An ally is someone who stands up and fights for a cause.”
Play writer Paula Vogel appeared on the same podcast in a separate interview.
She also condemned Ivanka Trump’s tweets, and the current issues facing minorities in the US.
“Do I feel right now that we’re at a volatile moment? Absolutely. Do I feel we’re going to lose these rights? I think it’s a real possibility.
“Why are we not instead also looking at what right now is being policed instead of saying, ‘Well, they’re not policing me yet’.
“Where is that shift in empathy so that we see that we are all one community and the concerns of people that are scared, right?
