Former Australian Labor Party leader says mainstream media is ‘full of gay activists’
The former leader of the Australian Labor Party has said that the marriage debate was getting too much coverage because the mainstream media is full of “gay activists”.
The former politician, Mark Latham, is now a media commentator.
On Twitter, Latham became upset as he wrote that “same-sex couples make up just 0.8 per cent of relationships in Australia”.
He added: “So how do the dominate debate via SSM (same-sex marriage)?
“Because they all work in the mainstream media.”
Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Latham went on to accuse ABC and Fairfax Media of pushing a “militant” gay agenda on the public.
“They’re over represented and consistently pushing a militant gay left line out of step with mainstream public opinion,” he said.
The former Labor leader has opposed marriage equality for the span of his career, having backed an amendment made to the Marriage Act which defined a union between a man and a woman during his leadership in 2004.
He has repeatedly attacked his successors for shifting the party towards acceptance.
Latham since defected to the Liberal Democrats.
Following his stint in politics, Latham became a presenter for Sky News.
However, he was fired from the role after he called a schoolboy “gay” on television.
He referred to the boy as “gay” because he appeared in a video about feminism.
The video, posted by Sydney Boys High School, features students reading statements from women about why they need feminism.
Mocking the video on-air, Latham referenced one specific male student, Hugh Bartley, saying: “I thought he was gay. Well, yes, who wouldn’t think that? Only later in the video did it become clear the students were reciting the words of women as part of some strange social media presentation.”
