Sense8 is being revived for one more special finale episode
In a statement posted on the official Sense8 Facebook, co-creator Lana Wachowski confirmed that Netflix had backtracked on cancelling the show.
The streaming service have officially commissioned at least one more two-hour long special.
Sense8 is set to return for one more episode.
The episode, which is expected to act as a finale, will air next year.
However, Lana hints that the future of the show may not be so final as previously thought.
She wrote: “Improbably, unforeseeably, your love has brought Sense8 back to life.”
“It is my great pleasure as well as Netflix’s (believe me, they love the show as much as we do but the numbers have always been challenging) to announce that there will be another two-hour special released next year,” she wrote.
“After that… if this experience has taught me anything, you NEVER know.”
Fans were devastated when the show was axed as it had been celebrated for it’s brilliant inclusion of LGBT characters and themes.
The acclaimed drama series from transgender sibling sci-fi directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski followed eight pansexual individuals around the globe with an apparent psychic connection.
The head of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, explained that the show had been cut because of the cost.
Sarandos said: “[The creators] made an incredible contribution to our culture with those shows.
“They did a beautiful show… the audience was very passionate, but not large enough to support the economics of something that big, even on our platform.”
He added: “Relative to what you spent, are people watching it? That is pretty traditional.
“A big expensive show for a huge audience is great! A big, expensive show for a tiny audience is hard even in our model to make that work very long.”
Sense8 was rumoured to cost around $9 million per episode to produce, making it one of the most expensive shows on TV.
Wachowski added in the statement that she was overwhelmed by “the outpouring of love and grief”.
She wrote: “I had never worked so hard, or put so much of myself into a project as I had with Sense8 and its cancellation hollowed me out.”
Wachowski added that they had fallen into “a fairly serious depression” after the cancellation.
“I felt the disappointment of my amazing crew. I felt the sadness of the actors who had given so much of themselves. But most of all I felt the heartbreak of our fans.
“But just as the characters in our show discover that they are not alone, I too have learned that I am not just a me. I am also a we,” she added.
