“It’s about these kids that are protecting each other in a very dangerous world and they’re funny, and they’re interesting.
“Their stories are very moving and engaging — watching people try to survive and be there for each other.”
The film centres around the gang called Check It, based in Washington DC and said to be one of the first documented LGBT gangs in America.
“At first glance, they seem unlikely gang-bangers,” reads the documentary’s website.
“Some of the boys wear lipstick and mascara, some stilettos. They carry Louis Vuitton bags, but they also carry knives, brass knuckles and mace.
“As vulnerable gay and transgender youth, they’ve been shot, stabbed, and raped.”
In the trailer for the documentary, several gang members talk about the abuse they have endured.
“I’ve been stabbed two times, I’ve been shot,” said one gang member.
“If you don’t stand up for yourself nobody will,” said another.
“You had two options: either to run or to fight, and we chose to fight,” said one.
The documentary also addresses how the gang try to overcome all of the challenges they have faced.
The trailer shows that the group puts on fashion shows and does work as runway models.
Check It have also launched their own clothing line.
