Lesbian rapper shot to death in New Orleans
Lesbian rapper Brittany Johnson has been shot and killed in New Orleans.
The 29-year-old was shot as well as another woman who has not been identified but is in the hospital.
Johnson, who performed under the monikers Bunny and Big Bei was shot in her home in Algiers on Saturday.
Police have confirmed that the two women were thought to be fighting before shots were fired.
However, they have not determined if anybody else was involved or if the argument was physical or verbal.
The family of Johnson have since shared messages remembering the rapper and her work for the LGBT community.
Her aunt, Rhonda Williams, told the Times-Picayune that the 29-year-old had a difficult time growing up in New Orleans as a black lesbian.
She said: “She thought she had a message that could be received by many others.
“She really wanted to connect with the LGBT community and help the younger generation that may have been struggling with self-identity.”
Williams added that she missed her niece’s caring nature, and was upset that she could not carry on making music for the LGBT community.
“She was just a very caring person, just very loving.
“That’s what I’m going to miss about her the most.”
She added that Johnson would want to be remembered “for her efforts to help young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people by letting them know through her music that they were not alone.”
“She was just a kind, loving person that really was just trying to find her place in the world. She didn’t deserve this.”
