Wimbledon skirt man speaks out after hilarious impromptu match
A tennis fan has opened up about being dressed up in a skirt at Wimbledon.
Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters and her doubles partner Rennae Stubbs had been facing off against Conchita Martinez and American Andrea Jaeger last week when she got distracted by a rowdy fan.
The player invited Irish audience member Chris Quinn to the court to face her serve himself.
Observing Wimbledon’s strict rule about players wearing white clothing, the player retrieved a spare skirt and shirt for Mr Quinn to wear.
He obligingly dressed up in the clothing, and played a few points – getting dominated by the pro players.
Speaking to the Irish Times, he said: “I thought I was going to be arrested. This kind of thing doesn’t happen at Wimbledon.
“It was on of those moments when you think maybe I shouldn’t have said anything.
“Before I knew it I was down on the court and they were putting me into a skirt. I used to play American football, I’ve big legs – I’m a big guy!
“But I didn’t think about it, I just pulled it up and one of the other ladies got a white top for me.”
He added: “It was great. Life is short, and it’s not many people who can say they got the chance to play at Wimbledon.
“I hear there is a thread on Twitter trying to get me over to play at the US Open, so you never know!”
Popular Icelandic band Sigur Rós recently announced they would use a gig in Australia’s Margaret Court Arena to raise money for LGBT rights.
Margaret Court, an Australian former tennis World Number One, made a splash earlier this year with a string of homophobic comments.
In further rants she has likened gay people to Hitler, claimed that homosexuality is an ungodly “lust for the flesh”, that LGBT tendencies in young people were “all the devil”, and that older lesbian tennis stars have ‘converted’ younger players.
In a radio interview, she said: “Tennis is full of lesbians… when I was playing there was only a couple there, but those couple that led, that took young ones into parties and things.”
Icelandic post-rock group Sigur Rós are set to play a concert this month in the Melbourne arena that is named after Court.
Ahead of the gig, the band took to Facebook to announce they would be taking advantage of the occasion to raise funds… for Australian Marriage Equality.
