Captain Planet has come out for equal marriage in Australia
1990s icon Captain Planet has come out fighting for equal marriage in Australia.
The famed TV superhero is best known as the star of environmentally-conscious cartoon series Captain Planet and the Planeteers, which was produced by Hanna-Barbera, also inspiring real-life green movements.
But the superhero is harnessing the power of Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Heart for another cause too these days – LGBT equality.
Ahead of a planned postal vote on equal marriage in Australia, which is expected to take place next month, the show’s official Facebook page has come out with a surprise endorsement.
A message from Captain Planet says: “Without heart, there would be no Captain Planet! Australia, you have only 14 days to make sure you are enrolled to vote for the postal vote on same sex marriage.”
He added catchphrase: “THE POWER IS YOURS!”
Given the show’s prominent moral message, it isn’t too much of a departure for our favourite Captain, but it’s taken some fans aback.
The cartoon superhero explained: “People are a huge part of our planet and caring about each other is one of the most important things we can do to make our world a better place.
“The power of heart is all about compassion, caring about our planet and each other – and like when we did episodes about children in war torn countries, AIDS and gun violence – we care.”
The message hasn’t been universally welcomed.
One ‘fan’ wrote: “Same sex is a term for mentally disordered people; mental hospital is their planet. Captain planet was my favourite cartoon character, don’t pollute it…”
Captain Planet responded: “You might have been watching a different show, sorry to hear you say that. The Power Is Yours.”
Another fan added: “In all seriousness Captain Planet, you were my hero growing up. I came out in February this year, still my hero today.”
