Anti-gay neo-Nazi website Daily Stormer apparently ‘hacked’ by Anonymous – but is it a hoax?

Neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer has allegedly been hacked by hacktivist collective Anonymous, though some are suggesting the “hack” is a hoax and smokescreen ahead of the site being pulled from the web.
The white supremacist fascist website has been active since 2013, posting a mix of racist, antisemitic, Islamophobic and homophobic material since.
Overnight, a single post was made purporting to be from Anonymous, claiming it had hacked and taken over the site.

If legitimate, the group claimed that the spark for its decision to hack the site was the death of Heather Heyer, “a victim of white supremacist terrorism” in Charlottesville.
Heyer was killed at the weekend when a car rammed into a crowd of counter-protesters in Virginia.
Earlier, white supremacist marchers at the “Unite the Right” march, which had been promoted on The Daily Stormer, were heard chanting “f**k you faggots”.
However, there has been some speculation that the apparent “hack” has been staged to stir up antisemitism.
“If goal of Daily Stormer was to get us to celebrate a BS claim, it backfired. Seriously, suck less,” read a message on Twitter from one supposed Anonymous member.
The “hack” happened just as web hosting provider GoDaddy tweeted several people stating that it will be pulling The Daily Stormer from its servers within 24 hours.
“We informed The Daily Stormer that they have 24 hours to move the domain to another provider, as they have violated our terms of service,” the message read.
The post on the Daily Stormer, purportedly from Anonymous, reads:
THIS SITE IS NOW UNDER THE CONTROL OF ANONYMOUS
WE HAVE TAKEN THIS SITE IN THE NAME OF HEATHER HEYER A VICTIM OF WHITE SUPREMACIST TERRORISM
FOR TOO LONG THE DAILY STORMER AND ANDREW ANGLIN HAVE SPEWED THEIR PUTRID HATE ON THIS SITE
THAT WILL NOT BE HAPPENING ANYMORE
WE HAVE ALL OF THE DETAILS ON THE SERVERS AND WILL BE RELEASING THE DATA WHEN WE FEEL THE TIME IS RIGHT
WE HAVE ALSO GATHERED LOCATIONAL DATA ON ANGLIN HIMSELF AND ARE SENDING OUR ALLIES IN LAGOS TO PAY HIM A VISIT IN PERSON
