Ellen shares the one word she was told not to say after coming out
Chat show legend Ellen DeGeneres has revealed one word she was told not to say after she came out.
Speaking this week on the Season 15 premiere of The Ellen Show, DeGeneres revealed one sad word she wasn’t allowed to say after she came out.
Speaking to Ryan Seacrest on Tuesday, DeGeneres reflected on the past 14 years of her show.
She said: “This was a show that nobody wanted to buy… They really didn’t think anyone would watch a lesbian during the day and, at the time, no one wanted to see a lesbian at night either. So I was really out of options.”
Going on, Ellen, who has dated actor Anne Heche and photographer Alexandra Hedison before marrying Portia de Rossi, said she wasn’t allowed to mention her dating life.
“I remember there was something that happened to my finger, and I was in a relationship and I was going to say ‘we,’ and they wouldn’t let me say ‘we’ because somebody would all of a sudden picture a woman in my life.”
DeGeneres this week shared a photo of what she looked like as a teenager.
DeGeneres also shared an emotional dedication to victims of the Texas hurricane and flooding.
She previously opened up about the bullying she endured after coming out as a lesbian.

Ellen decided to come out in real life before her character did on the show, with interviews on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Diane Sawyer and the cover of TIME Magazine.
“It’s something I decided I wanted to do and thought it would be wonderful for me as a result,” Ellen told Oprah at the time.
“I never thought it was anybody’s business, who I am and who I am with. And then I realised since I had this secret that worried me all the time that it made it feel like something was wrong.”
At one point Oprah asks what made Ellen ‘finally comfortable to say it’ to which Ellen responds, “I’ve become more comfortable with myself just in general and I went to therapy and you know, not for that issue but just finding out more about myself.”
Sawyer even went as far as to ask Ellen whether she’d slept with men.
DeGeneres noted she’d slept with two men in her life and likened the occasions to Peggy Lee’s hit ‘Is That All There Is?’
In the weeks following her character coming out to over 42 million viewers, many religious groups began to protest outside their local ABC stations to take Ellen off air.
