Sam Smith has instant number one hit with emotional return to music
Sam Smith has released his new single.
The Oscar winning singer has had a three year hiatus from music, during which he even stopped Tweeting.
In The Lonely Hour, released in 2014, became the best-selling album of the year in the UK, while it sold more than any other British artist for two decades.
Now the gay singer has shared his return to music – and it’s gone straight in at number one on iTunes.
Taking to Facebook ahead of its release, he wrote: “‘Too Good At Goodbyes’. 8th September 2017. So excited for you to hear the new single… you all xx”

Too Good At Goodbyes is a distinctly Sam Smith record, complete with a gospel choir for backing vocals.

Last week he sent an email to fans to reveal news of the new work.
“First of all I want to say thank you,” he wrote.
“Thank you for being so patient and for letting me have the past year to really escape into my mind & write music so freely.
“I feel so rejuvenated and have so many stories I can’t wait to tell you.”
The British recording artist continued: “The wait is so nearly over. Something is coming very very very very soon.
“I am scared & excited at the same time. I’ve poured my soul & heart into this record.”
Smith was previously criticised for believing he was the first gay man to win an Oscar.
