President Trump has made an address at the United Nations threatening to “totally destroy North Korea”, using Elton John lyrics.

Trump made his first address at the UN on Tuesday, calling Kim Jong Un “Rocket Man”, not for the first time, while threatening to wipe out North Korea.

It wasn’t the first time he has referred to Kim Jong as Rocket Man.

On Sunday, he tweeted: “I spoke with President Moon of South Korea last night. Asked him how Rocket Man is doing. Long gas lines forming in North Korea. Too bad!”

“The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea,” Trump said at the UN on Tuesday.

“Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime.”

As a result of the references to Sir Elton John’s famed lyrics, searches for the term ‘Rocket Man’ went up from around 400 a day to 4,500.

Threats of military action against North Korea might throw a spanner in the works for the US government’s plans to purge transgender people from the military.

Trump stirred anger last month by announcing he would impose a ban on transgender soldiers serving openly in the military.

Reversing a decision under Barack Obama, Trump claimed in a string of tweets that the military “cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail”.

The loosely-worded announcement, which was made without detail or consultation with military leaders, has been drawn up into a directive that is expected to see active-duty transgender people dismissed from their roles.

But the heightening tensions between President Trump and North Korea might prevent the policy from going into effect, it has emerged.

North Korea last month threatened a strike on a US military base in Guam, while Trump vowed to respond with “fire and fury”.
