James Corden pictured kissing Sean Spicer at the Emmys
Sean Spicer appeared at the Emmy awards this weekend to mock himself and his time as press secretary for the White House.
The former member of the Trump administration joined Stephen Colbert on stage for Colbert’s opening monologue.
Colbert introduced Spicer as Melissa McCarthy, who is well known for her impressions of Spicer on SNL.
Spicer mimicked himself and President Trump as he told those at the ceremony that it would be “the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period. Both in person and around the world.”
The awards camera panned at the audience, including McCarthy, as they all looked shocked at Spicer’s appearance.
James Corden, host of the Late Late show, was pictured cosying up with Spicer as he planted a kiss on his cheek.
The picture and Spicer’s appearance on the show both received backlash as people accused awards organisers of putting him on a pedestal despite his mishaps while in the administration.
Trans queer writer Patti Harrison wrote: “congrats to sean spicer at the emmys!!! cant wait to see brock turner at the kids choice awards!!!!!!!! ted bundy at the GLAAD awards!!!!”
“Sean Spicer was horrible in Jan 2017. Sean Spicer is horrible today. Sean Spicer will be horrible tomorrow. Stop normalizing horrible,” journalist Tony Posnanski added.
Actor Zach Braff said: “I’m not ready to laugh “with” Sean Spicer. I think he is an evil, opportunistic liar that hurt our country.”
Since the backlash, Corden has said that he was “disappointed” in himself and blamed the kiss on too much alcohol and compared it to waking up the morning after a night out and regretting kissing someone.
“Anyone ever have that feeling when you get a little drunk and then wake up the next morning and think ‘Oh God, who did I kiss last night?’ It’s a bit like that,” he explained.
Corden went on to say that the night had some big winners, and Sean Spicer was not one of those.
He said: “The big winners last night were Donald Glover, Hulu and former White House press secretary Sean Spicer. Spicer won best actor in a comedy for his role in Donald Trump’s administration.
“I’m kidding, of course. But Sean Spicer actually did make a cameo at last night’s ceremony.
“According to some reports, at the after-party, Spicer was the most popular guy in the room. And I just want to say, I think people are forgetting that this man lied to the American people, and should not be embraced.
“Understandably, some people have been disappointed by this photo. In truth, I’m disappointed by it as well. I am, have been reading a lot of harsh comments on Twitter today, and I hear you loud and clear, truly, I do,” he added.
