Gay footballer Robbie Rogers is the new face of Target clothing
Gay sportsman Robbie Rogers is the new face of Target clothing.
The out player is to front the major US chain’s new range, Goodfellow & Co.
Former Leeds United star came out as gay in 2013, while announcing his retirement from professional football – but he has since come out of retirement and now plays for LA Galaxy.
Rogers posted on Instagram that he was excited to partner with Target.
He wrote: “Had so much fun a few weeks ago filming with @Target.
“I’m really excited to be partnering with them to launch their all-new brand #Goodfellow.
“Lucky enough to have explored the line and I’ll be sharing some of my favorites over the next few weeks.”
The choice of a gay man to front the campaign has been welcomed by LGBT groups.
“We’re thankful to Target for featuring an out gay man — with a fiancé and baby — in their campaign, and we continue to be grateful to Rogers for his willingness to be a voice and a face for LGBT equality,” Outsports wrote.
Rogers recently announced he is to marry his boyfriend, TV producer partner Greg Berlanti.
“Thank you to everyone before us that made this moment possible,” Rogers wrote in his post.
His partner also shared a moving post about the news as they welcomed in 2017.
“I feel extremely lucky and blessed to end 2016 engaged to the love of my life. Happy New Year!” he wrote.
“For me it (is) the year my heart doubled in size.
“First, when my son Caleb was born. And second, a few days ago, when I got engaged to my soulmate.
“Though I dreamed of both those things happening, I’m not sure I truly believed they were possible.
“Thanks to the friends and family who helped me find my way to this moment in my blessed life.”
Last year he promised to be “extremely flamboyant”, when he travels to the 2018 World Cup, set to take place in Russia.
