Russell Tovey to play gay DC superhero The Ray

The star of Being Human and The History Boys Russell Tovey will be flying the rainbow flag in a new DC superhero series as he takes on the part of The Ray.
The actor, who is gay, will star in American channel CW’s Arroverse crossover, alongside Supergirl, Arrow and The Flash in the all-star superhero series.
The character, whose full name is Raymond “Ray” Terrill, takes part in the comics as an ambitious reporter who discovers that government scientists were working on a secret project to transform light into a weapon of mass destruction.
It is during the investigation that Terrill is exposed to a genetic bomb. which gives him the power to absorb light as energy and create illusions by manipulating light rays.

He will also voice the character on the animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray, which will air on CW Seed.
The proudly out star has also taken the role of a gay footballer in The Pass, as well as a disgruntled lovelorn boss in HBO’s Looking.
The actor has said that being gay has been a blessing in his career.
“Being gay is the best thing that ever happened to me,” said Tovey in an interview with Attitude.
“If I’m going to be seen as a ‘pioneer’, a gay man and a performer, I need to make sure I put out a positive message,” he also said in an interview with The Guardian. “Things are great for me, and I want to show that’s possible.”
The four-part DC series will air in November this year.
