Younger actor Dan Amboyer comes out as gay and has some massive news
Actor Dan Amboyer has come out as gay, and has also shared some pretty big personal news.
The Younger actor announced that he has married his long-time boyfriend Eric P. Berger.
“Being a young actor in the industry, I had a lot of people who strongly advised me to stay quiet,” Amboyer told People magazine.
“That was hard to live with. But I’ve never played a gay role before and I didn’t want to be limited by some strange perception.”
The couple got married on Saturday in New York City at a ceremony with 115 of their family and friends present.
For his part, Berger accepted that his boyfriend’s approach to coming out was both “a personal decision and a business decision” and added that he had never “pushed” his partner to come out.
Amboyer had been with Eric for ten years, but was very private about his sexuality when he started new acting jobs.
“When I went to work on a new show or film, there was always a process of letting people know.
“It was a hard decision to figure out how to approach it in a public way. There are some actors out there now who just keep it as an unspoken aspect of their life and never discuss it in public.
“But then there are men like Matt Bomer and Zachary Quinto. I look up to them and see how them being so open affected other people and the country’s perception of gay people.”
Amboyer also said that he was “inspired” by fellow Younger actor Nico Tortorella, who has become an advocate for sexual fluidity.
He added that there will be less stigma the more open actors can be about their sexuality.
Last year, Tortorella opened up about having sex with a man for the first time and discussed why he increasingly identified himself as bisexual, despite being “emotionally fluid”.
“The more I’m having these conversations, the more comfortable I am identifying as bisexual,” he said.
“I’ve been so hesitant about using the word for so long, because it does have a negative connotation in our generation.”
He added: “People fought for so long for that ‘B’ in LGBT, and I refuse to be the person that’s going to throw that away because I think I have a more colourful word.”
Tortorella later added of polyamory: “Why is it socially acceptable for two gay people to be in an open relationship, but if you hear about a straight couple in an open relationship people are like, “What? How does that work?” It doesn’t make sense to people.”
