Marvel will feature its first bisexual superhero in Thor: Ragnarok
Marvel has its first bisexual superhero in a blockbuster film.
Thor: Ragnarok will feature Valkyrie, a badass warrior who will be a Han Solo type – that is, a dashing, flawed renegade of a hero.
In fact, she’ll be so kick-ass that – without giving away any spoilers – she’ll be able to go toe-to-toe with Thor, an actual god.
Valkyrie was bi in all-female comic book Fearless Defenders.
The comic sees our hero come to this world to join forces with Misty Knight – also featured in Netflix’s Luke Cage and The Defenders – and Dr Annabelle Riggs.
And she and Annabelle kiss in the same issue in which Valkyrie saves her life.
However, it’s been unclear whether she would also have this sexuality in the new blockbuster film.
That is, until now.
Actress Tessa Thompson has revealed on Twitter that her character will bring some much-needed LGBT representation to Marvel’s cinematic universe.
Thompson, who has also starred in Selma, Creed and TV show Westworld, wrote: “She’s bi. And yes, she cares very little about what men think of her.
“What a joy to play!”
Earlier this year, Marvel launched a new comic led by America Chavez, a queer Latina teenager with lesbian parents.
The comic, called America, prompted an outpouring of support from readers who were overjoyed to finally see an LGBT Latina superhero lead her own comic.
However, Marvel also moved to quash speculation that two warriors in the upcoming film Black Panther will be in a lesbian relationship, sparking outrage and accusations of erasure.
Valkyrie therefore represents the first bi superhero in a big, blockbuster film.
This, of course, is long overdue.
However, Thompson clarified that though her character is bi, this doesn’t receive any screen time in the third instalment of the Thor series.
She wrote: “Val is Bi in the comics & I was faithful to that in her depiction.
“But her sexuality isn’t explicitly addressed in Thor: Ragnarok.”
The news follows rival company DC creating genderfluid superhero Doctor Endless earlier this year.
Last month, DC announced that Russell Tovey will be flying the rainbow flag in a new series, as he takes on the part of The Ray.
The actor, who is gay, will star in American channel CW’s Arroverse crossover, alongside Supergirl, Arrow and The Flash in the all-star superhero series.
In March, it was revealed that Power Rangers would feature the first ever gay superhero in a film.
The reboot of the 90s TV show and film series saw Trini, the Yellow Ranger, struggle with her relationship with another girl in the film’s second act.
