Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis reveal they both waited for marriage equality before getting married

Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis say they refused to marry their partners before marriage equality as introduced.
In an interview with PrideSource, Bell said it “felt gross” to marry before their LGBT friends could.
In an interview with PrideSource ahead of their new film, A Bad Mom’s Christmas, the women said they both waited until marriage equality was made legal in every US state before they got married.

Bell married husband Dax Shepard in October 2013, just months after the Supreme Court overturned an appeal defending Proposition 8.
On why the couple decided to wait, she said: “It just felt gross. What are we gonna do?
“Have a party and be like, “Look at us celebrating this thing you can’t do?”
Mila Kunis waited even longer to marry now-husband Ashton Kutcher.
The couple wed one month after the Supreme Court legalised same-sex marriage across the whole of the US in a landmark decision in 2015.

Kunis revealed that her views on marriage were formed early on, and instinctually felt it was wrong for her to get married while her LGBT counterparts could not.
She revealed to PrideSource that during her father’s speech at her wedding he revealed that at the age of 14 she told him she didn’t want to get married, “because the gays can’t get married”.
“The concept of marriage didn’t make sense to me because my friends couldn’t do it, and I found nothing wrong with what they wanted. So, I was like, ‘Well, then it’s not sacred, then it’s not what it’s supposed to be, so I don’t want it.’”
Kunis went on to share the exact moment in which she and Ashton decided to get married, “I got a text that said it was legal, and I’m in the middle of a stunt and there’s fire blowing everywhere, and I just start bawling ― literally bawling. Because something that I thought was never gonna happen ― ever! ― happened.”
“The next text was my husband and he was like, ‘Now what?’ And I went, ‘OK.’
A number of other celebrities have previously spoken out about their decision to stay unmarried until gay marriage was made legal. Lena Dunham in 2014 spoke to Howard Stern about the prospect of marrying her long-term boyfriend Jack Antonoff.
“We’re not against marriage, but I wanna wait until it’s something—my sister’s gay and it just doesn’t feel good to me to do something she can’t do.”

They’re not the first stars to refuse to wed before marriage equality is legal.
Kylie Minogue also spoke out about the issue in 2016, revealing that she won’t marry her British fiancé Joshua Sasse until gay marriage is legal in Australia.
She has previously spoken out against the status of gay marriage in Australia, calling the country’s attitude on marriage equality “backwards”.

Bisexual actress Angelina Jolie famously married Brad Pitt in August 2014, before same-sex marriage was legalised nationwide.
However, Pitt had previously stated in a 2006 interview with Esquire that he and Angelina “will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able.”
The couple received some backlash from the LGBT community for apparently going back on their previous statement, with some publications such as the Times stating the whole situation “seems like a ruse”.

While gay marriage is now finally legal in the US and UK, the results of the Australian public vote on whether same-sex marriage should be made legal has yet to revealed.
