The lead singer of the Scissor Sisters will be taking to Broadway next year, as part of hit stage show Kinky Boots.

Jake Shears will play Charlie in the long-running show, the lead character in the hit play.

Having inherited a failing shoe factory from his father, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with a cabaret performer and drag queen Lola.

He goes on produce a line of high-heeled boots to save the business – while also discovering the pair aren’t so different after all.

Kicking off his run on January 8 next year, Shears will also be joined by Pentatonix’s Kirstin Maldonado, who play a Lauren, a worker at the factory.

Speaking about the part, Jake said he “couldn’t be more excited” and it would be a “delicious challenge”.

“Being in a musical as complex and substantial as this is going to be a huge challenge,” he added .

“I’m super, super excited.”

Speaking about his relationship with the show, he added: “All the messages resonate with me.

“Growing up gay, and having the experience that I did finding myself when I was a teenager, I wish this show was around when I was a kid.

The former pop star will be playing the part until April 1, and was keen to stress how excited he was at the role.

“It’s about singing and dancing and making people happy, and that’s always been my motto.

“It’s a fantastic time and a great emotional journey.”

The singer has previously spoken out about feeling proud to be a role model for gay teens.

Scissor Sisters, whose hits included ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancin”, formed in 2001 and have put out four studio albums.

The band went on a hiatus in 2012 though, announcing the news to fans at a gig in London.

However, they promised it wouldn’t be the last of the musical group, with the duo breaking their hiatus in the wake of the Pulse shooting massacre.
