These adorable mums found love in the school playground
Two mums who found love on the playground have won over the public’s hearts in New South Wales.
Bridget Harris and Dee Why met at their children’s school, and found themselves growing closer when their marriages broke down.
The pair were brought closer together as two of their children became best friends.
And although the unlikely relationship caught them off guard, they are now hoping to get hitched on the back of Australia’s yes vote for equal marriage.
“I thought, ‘What’s wrong with me?’ But in the end I could not fight it,” Harris said to news.com.au.
Harris, like her partner, had previously been in heterosexual relationships.
“I never thought I’d be a single mum, let alone in a female relationship,” she said.
“But you can’t help who you fall for,” she added.
The pair, who have six children together, have now moved into a shared home.
And now that the legalisation of gay marriage is nigh in Australia, the pair hope to get hitched.
“It was hard keeping our relationship a secret — it felt like we were living a double life,” Harris said.
“It’s been such a relief to tell everyone. It’s nothing to be ashamed of but there’s still a stigma.”
Harris said her and her partner took time to open up to their family and friends about their relationship.
Stating that the Yes result had meant she could be more open about her relationship, Harris said that “a weight has been lifted from my shoulders”.
“In all my other relationships I’ve been in I could be open about them but with this one it was really difficult. It felt like I wasn’t being true to myself. Now it’s out there it’s like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders,” she said.
