George Michael might finally get a Christmas Number One
A campaign has been launched to give singer George Michael his first Christmas Number one following his death last year.
The campaign, which uses the hashtags #TeamGeorge and #LastXmas4XmasNo1, is working to put the Wham! classic ‘Last Christmas’ on the top of the much contested Christmas charts.
#TeamGeorge is asking George Michael fans to purchase and stream the song between the 15th and 21st of December- the week that decides the Christmas Day charts.
Previous artists to reach a Christmas number one in the UK singles charts have included The Spice Girls, Girls Aloud and Bob The Builder.
Although Last Christmas is over 30 years old, the campaign does have a chance of success.
The Wham! Christmas classic is already rising up the charts as the anniversary of his death approaches.
This week’s music chart put the song at number three in the UK charts, up from number five last week.
This puts the Wham! song right up there with another festive classic, Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You, which currently occupies number three on the singles chart.
Last Christmas was 29th in the charts at the beginning of December, moving up 24 places in a week.
As Christmas draws closer, fans have fresh hopes that next week’s chart will finally George Michael a deserved Christmas number one.
George was found dead at his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, age 53, on Christmas Day last year.
Hundreds of tributes were placed outside his home following the news of his death.
According to the coroner’s report he died of natural causes, not from a drug overdose as some claimed.
Last week, George’s ex-boyfriend Fadi Fawaz said he believes he will never find love again.
It was also revealed last week that police had launched an investigation into how a 999 call, thought to be made by Fadi, was leaked to the media.
Two members of ambulance staff were interviewed by police as authorities sought to find the source of the leak.
