Footballer’s wife jailed after calling man ‘gay’ and smashing glass over his head
A woman has been jailed after smashing a glass over a man’s head.
Liane Wilkinson was sentenced to prison time this week over the incident, which happened in a Dunstable pub in July 2016, where she had been watching a football match.
Wilkinson, who is married to Luton Town and Stevenage footballer Luke Wilkinson, had accused her victim of being “gay”.
The court heard that when the man angrily responded by suggesting he “would show her how gay he was”, Wilkinson threw a glass at him that smashed over his head.
The attack left permanent scarring on the victim’s face.
According to the Mirror, prosecutor Isabel Delamare said: “He threw drink over her and she then threw a glass on his head. It shattered on his forehead and bled a lot.”
Wilkinson was found guilty of wounding with intent.
She pleaded with the Luton Crown Court judge not to send her to prison because she is a mother, and is the primary care provider to her three children.
Defending, Nick Bonehill said: “Her actions are wholly out of character – and will have a devastating effect on others. She is mortified. She has expressed genuine remorse and apologises for what happened.”
“The offence was completely out of character. She made a very big mistake. It is not the way she would normally act. She will not be in trouble again. She is not a risk to the public.”
The judge said: “Glassing somebody is perhaps one of most sickening acts of drunken violence we sees in courts.
“Their effects are ugly and they are sometimes life changing. It was a crowded pub and you were significantly under the influence of alcohol.”
The 34-year-old, who had a previous conditional discharge for an assault, was sentenced to three years behind bars, and ordered to pay £2,500 compensation as well as £2,500 costs.
