Call Me by Your Name has received four BAFTA nominations

2017’s acclaimed LGBTQ film Call Me by Your Name has received four nominations at this year’s BAFTA’s.
After losing out on its three Golden Globe nominations on Monday, including Best Drama Motion Picture, it seems as though all hope for an LGBTQ film winning big at this year’s award season has not yet been lost.

The 2017 romance coming-of-age drama is based on the 2007 novel by Andre Aciman and follows the blossoming relationship between 17-year-old Jewish American Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and his architect father’s assistant Oliver (Arnie Hammer) in 1980’s Italy.
When Oliver comes to stay with the family Elio is forced out of his comfort zone of music and books and into Oliver’s exuberant world. Despite Elio having a girlfriend and Oliver being interested in a girl living in the village, the two develop a passionate relationship.
It’s BAFTA nominations include Best Actor in a Leading Role for Timothée Chalamet, Best Director for Luca Guadagnin, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film.

Call Me by Your Name will have to fight off some strong competition for the prestigious Best Picture Award as it’s been nominated alongside Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which the film lost out to for the award of Best Drama Motion Picture at the Golden Globes.
However, LGBTQ representation is not just a one film race at this year’s BAFTA’s as Francis Lee’s British drama God’s Own Country is also up for the Outstanding British Film award.

God’s Own Country is set in Yorkshire and follows Johnny (Josh O’Connor) as his life is turned upside down with the arrival of Romanian migrant worker Gheorghe (Alec Secareanu) who helps him during lambing season, and later with the running of his families farm.
It has been dubbed the British Brokeback Mountain by critics, and hopefully will do just as well this year’s award season, despite competition in its category from award season favourite Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri.
Additionally, leading men of both Call Me by Your Name and God’s Own Country, Timothée Chalamet and Josh O’Connor, have been nominated for the EE Rising Star Award which gives notice to a young actor or actress who has demonstrated exceptional talent within the film industry. It is the only award of the night that is voted for by the public.

Both films did exceptionally well at independent film awards. God’s Own Country won four awards, including Best British Independent Film, at the 2017 British Independent Film Awards.
Call Me By Your Name won Best Feature and Timothée Chalamet won Breakthrough Actor at the 2017 IFP Gotham Awards.
LGBTQ film representation is looking to be high this award season, however, it remains to be seen whether these films will succeed in winning their nominations.
The BAFTA’s will air live on BBC One on February 18 with brand new host Joanna Lumley taking over from Stephen Fry’s 12-year reign over the show.

Even if these LGBTQ films don’t win big at the BAFTA’s, the Oscar nominees are set to be announced on January 23 and will hopefully see some strong LGBTQ representation.
