A mum rang a gay bar after her son came out – and she got the best advice from this bartender
A mother didn’t know what to do after her son came out as gay.
She seemingly had no-one to turn to who could tell her what to say or do.
So she did what anyone in her situation would do: she reached out to someone with experience of LGBT issues.
And who better than the bartender at a gay bar?
She called Sipps Bar in Mississippi, which seems to be the only gay bar in Gulfport, the second-biggest city in the state.
Thankfully, the bartender who picked up, Kara Coley, has 17 years of bartending in gay bars.
All the same, she said that the call was “definitely a first for me!”
On Facebook, Kara wrote that she “got the most random phone call at the bar tonight! ” before giving a blow-by-blow account of the wonderful conversation.
“Me: Good evening. Thank you for calling Sipps!
“Lady on phone: Is this a gay bar?
“Me: Well we are an everybody bar, but yes, mostly gay.”
The mother then tentatively broached the subject of her call.
“Lady: can I ask you a…?
“Me: Sure.
“Lady: Are you gay?
“Me: YES MA’AM.
“Lady: What was the one thing you wanted from your parents when you a came out?
“Me: Umm.
“Lady: My son just came out to me and I don’t want to say anything that may mess him up in the head.
“Me: Well I think that you should just make sure he knows that you love and accept… wait, do you accept it?
“Lady: Well, umm, yes, if that’s what he wants.
“Me: You should definitely let him know that you love and accept him! I think everything will be okay from there!
“Lady: Okay, well thank you.
“Me: You are very welcome, and good luck!”
What a wonderful example of a parent who knows absolutely nothing – but still wants to help her gay son.
In October, the Republican-controlled state made it legal for religious people to discriminate against gay people.
With this in mind, it’s good to know that at least one mother has her gay son’s best interests at heart.
