Oscars 2018: Coco creators thank same-sex spouses in stunning acceptance speech
The creators of Academy Award-winning Coco are making the headlines for all of the right reasons as they cited their same-sex relationships and the importance of representation in a moving speech.
Coco, a film which details a Mexican boy’s journey into the Día de los Muertos underworld, won the Best Animation accolade in last night’s ceremony.
And when the creators of the show went up to collect their award, they made sure that they paid tribute to their significant others in their speech.
Adrian Molina, Coco’s co-director, and Darla K. Anderson, Coco’s producer thanked their same-sex spouses, as well as voicing their love for Mexico’s “endlessly beautiful culture and traditions.”

“The biggest thank you of all [goes] to the people of Mexico,” said Unkrich. “Coco could not exist without your endlessly beautiful culture and traditions,” he said.
Acknowledging the stark lack of diversity in the film industry, the creators reiterated the importance of representation, and why films like Coco should be amplified.
“With Coco, we tried to take a step forward toward a world where all children can grow up seeing characters in movies that look and talk and live like they do,” Coco’s director Lee Unkrich said, accepting the award. “Marginalized people deserve to feel like they belong. Representation matters.”
The Twitterarti shared their support for the filmmaker’s speech, celebrating both queer representation and Latino representation alike.
