Anti-gay ‘family values’ Republican resigns after he’s caught cheating on his wife

An anti-gay Republican has resigned after he was caught cheating on his wife.
Bill Dix, the Iowa Senate Majority Leader and a self-defined “family values” politician, was filmed kissing a lobbyist earlier this month.
Dix, who had been in the Senate since 2011, co-sponsored an amendment to the state constitution which would have defined marriage as solely heterosexual.

He did so during his 10 years in the Iowa House of Representatives.
In 2006, during an unsuccessful run for a different seat in the House, he boasted about the part he played in helping the bill.
“I not only sponsored and voted for this amendment, but I was a leader who helped shepard [sic] this amendment through the Iowa House,” said Dix.

“Liberal activist judges are threatening our family values and you can count on me to be a leader in Congress who will stand up to them and work to pass this amendment to the United States Constitution,” he added.
In a statement today, Iowa Senate President Jack Whitver said: “Effective at 2pm today, Bill Dix resigned his position as Majority Leader and State Senator.
“I believe he made the right decision for himself and for his district, but most importantly, I believe he made the decision in the best interest of his family.”

The former state Senator has three children.
Dix is far from the first ‘family values’ Republican to get in trouble for their behaviour.
Last year, Ohio congressman Wes Goodman – a married Republican lawmaker with a long history of campaigning against LGBT rights – resigned after being caught having gay sex in his office.

The politician wrote on his now-defunct website about “healthy, vibrant, thriving, values-driven families” being “the key to Ohio’s future greatness.
Republican Ralph Shortey, a senior member of Donald Trump’s primary campaign team in Oklahoma, stepped down as state senator last March after being discovered in a hotel room with a 17-year-old boy who Shortey hired as a prostitute.

Later in the year, he pleaded guilty to a child sex trafficking offence for soliciting sex from the boy.
In exchange for this plea, federal prosecutors dropped three counts of child pornography against the former politician.

And just last week, it was revealed that Erika Harold, a Republican candidate for Illinois Attorney General, allegedly said she would rather hand over a child to known child abusers than a loving gay couple.
