Adam Rippon to star in Broadway musical based on his own life, TV talent search to find Mike Pence
Adam Rippon is developing a Broadway musical based on his own life – with a TV talent search to find his Mike Pence.
The Olympic bronze medallist had previously confirmed that he would be moving away from ice skating to focus on media projects, and one of the projects in development by Rippon is already generating a lot of buzz.
The skater, who has demonstrated his impressive set of pipes on previous occasions, is set to star in a new Broadway show.
But this won’t just be any show, this will be Adam Rippon: The Experience.
The full-flung musical will see Rippon recalling his own life experiences through song and dance, explaining how he stood up to homophobic bullies and learned to become the Adam Rippon we all know and love.
Rippon’s story will be weaved together throughout the show with that of his nemesis, Mike Pence, charting Pence’s rise to power ahead of his showdown with Rippon at the Olympics.
An on-stage retractable ice rink, specially developed for the project, will allow the show to seamlessly shift between ice skating and traditional song-and-dance numbers.
A source said: “America fell in love with Adam for being true to who he is. Well, they’re going to see who he is like never before in this fierce new show.”
‘Kinky Boots’ duo Harvey Fierstein and lyricist: Cyndi Lauper are helping Rippon to shape songs for the the project, with Hamilton scribe Lin Manuel-Miranda in a consulting role.
A TV talent search will find an actor to take on the role, with Rippon, Lauper and Ellen DeGeneres on the judging panel for the ‘X Factor’ style show.
Producer Kane Fema said: “We’re hoping to see a full range of Americans turn out for this amazing opportunity to play on a Broadway stage.
“It doesn’t matter what race you are or what gender you are – we are looking for someone who can really embody the role of Mike Pence on a deeper level.”
The winner of the talent search will be set to play Pence eight shows a week when it opens at the newly-converted Rentalo Theatre next year.
