Ellen Page joins Laura Linney in Netflix’s Tales of the City revival
Ellen Page has joined the cast of upcoming Netflix drama Tale of the City.
The Flatliners star will appear opposite Laura Linney in the revival of the mystery drama series, based on the novel series of the same name by Armistead Maupin.
Linney appeared in all three of the original television adaptations, portraying Mary Ann Singleton, a Cleveland-born woman who decides to move to San Francisco after vacationing there.
The mini-series spanned several years and saw Mary Ann meet all kinds of characters during her time in the city from sweet gay guy Michael Tolliver and bisexual hippy Mona Ramsey to menacing roof occupier Norman Neal Williams.
Mary Ann also had a close relationship with her eccentric, marijuana-growing landlady Anna Madrigal. Olympia Dukakis is set to reprise her role as Anna.
Barbara Garrick, who brought DeDe Halcyon Day to life, will also make a comeback, while newbie Page will play Linney’s onscreen daughter Shawna.
It has been reported that additional cast is soon to be announced ahead of production starting later this year.
According to Deadline, the new series will see Mary Ann return home to San Francisco and reunite with her child and ex-husband Brian, having not seen them for 20 years.
Since she left them, Mary Ann has been trying to pursue a career in Connecticut but her seemingly perfect life hasn’t stopped her from having a midlife crisis nor made it any easier not to avoid going back to Barbary Lane.
“I couldn’t be more excited about this new brand-new incarnation of Tales,” said Maupin in a prepared statement.
“It’s set in present-day San Francisco with all the joys and complications that might suggest for the residents of 28 Barbary Lane. Mrs. Madrigal’s tenants, both old and new, will be entangled in delicious new adventures and ever-expanding possibilities for love.”
Lauren Morelli (Orange is the New Black) will act as showrunner, executive producer and writer. Both Linney and Maupin will also executive produce, while Alan Poul (The Newsroom, Grace and Frankie) is set to direct. The show is currently scheduled to debut in 2019.
Netflix is no stranger to revivals. In 2016, the streaming giant released the hugely-anticipated Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, a mini-series based on the titular comedy drama which picked up almost a decade after its original finale.
Other existing shows that they’ve previously revisited include Arrested Development, Queer Eye, Wet Hot American Summer and Black Mirror.
