This teen used a brilliant Grey’s Anatomy reference to come out in her yearbook
A teen in New Mexico used a Grey’s Anatomy timestamp to come out in her high school yearbook.
Krista Montoya, 18, is graduating from high school at the end of year and, in pure American tradition, she had to select a special quote for her yearbook.
Her quote went as follows: “Grey’s Anatomy, Season 5, Episode 6, 39:40.”
If you look up said episode and skip to the 39:40 minute mark from Montoya’s quote, it correlates to a particular scene between characters Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Dr. Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith).
In the scene, Hahn realises that she’s gay while tears of joy fall down her face as she repeats it over and over.
Technically, Montoya’s quote translates to this:
Montoya shared the screenshot on her Twitter to enlighten her curious – and clueless – followers.
She told BuzzFeed that she used the quote as a “bold message.”
She had come out in freshman year and experienced backlash from other students, losing some friends along the way.
“I feel as if some people did not believe me,” Montoya said, “In fact, throughout high school, people said by senior year I’d be dating a boy. So I think I did this to make a bold statement towards that comment from some of my peers.”

“I was just watching Grey’s Anatomy one day [when she saw the quote] and I loved it and I said, ‘This will be my senior quote.’ I took a screenshot and it’s been in my camera roll ever since.”
Back in 2015, another gay student made waves online with his clever use of yearbook quotes.
Maxwell Barrett’s quote simply read: “Of course I dress well, I didn’t spend all that time in the closet for nothing.”
At the time, Barrett explained to the Huffington Post he wanted to be remembered by his peers. “I had never done sports, or clubs. I was always just an art student. I wanted to go out in a way people would remember me by,” he said.
Barrett hadn’t yet come out to his parents but told the Huffington Post he could tell they “already knew.”
Their reaction is heartwarming.
“They said it was the best one in the yearbook and that they were proud of me,” he said.
