James Gunn slams homophobic post about McDonald’s rainbow fries in epic tweet
Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has slammed a homophobic post about a box of rainbow-branded McDonald’s fries with an epic tweet.
The filmmaker was responding to a tweet, in which one user – known as Wally M Thomas – had complained about the pride edition fries boxes.
The user wrote: “Really @McDonalds not lovin’ my gay fries. I take my family 2 McDonald’s 4 family meal not 2 have #LGBTQ shoved in my face. #McDonalds.”
Gunn re-tweeted Wally M Thomas, but sarcastically added his own remarks: “Good point. I bet you, like me, are also not loving your gay sky. I don’t take my family outside to have God shove #LGBTQ in my face by making rainbows. Also by making gay people.”
Gunn’s tweet quickly went viral, getting more than 3,000 likes and hundreds of re-tweets.
One user responding to Gunn’s tweet wrote: “I appreciate this tweet so much. Thank you.”
Another said: “Oh my god, if this guy flips out that you tweeted him and he asks for an autograph, you can only send one on one of these cartons.”
Gunn has previously voiced supported for an LGBTQ+ character in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
Speaking to press at the launch of sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn was asked if he would like to include a gay character in the franchise.
He said: “Absolutely. I would love to be able to.”
The director then teased that there might already be an LGBT character in the second film, saying: “We might have already done that. I say watch the movie. Check it out. See what you think.”
However, he later back-pedalled on his remarks, admitting that the sequel doesn’t include a gay character.
He said: “What I meant to say is this: There are a lot of gay people in the world. There are a lot of bisexual people in the world.
“There are a lot of characters in the MCU. We’ve barely gotten to know the sexuality of any of those characters.”
McDonald’s first issued its special edition rainbow-branded fries boxes to mark Pride month in June last year.
At the time, the move outraged homophobes.
Evangelist Joshua Feuerstein, who previously suggested that Christians should use guns to oppose same-sex marriage, wrote online: “DISGUSTING! McDonald’s released their RAINBOW FRIES today in honour of GAY PRIDE!”
