Grandma goes viral after ironing her granddaughter’s Pride flag
A grandma has won the love of the internet for helping her granddaughter prepare for Pride in the most gran-like way possible, by ironing her flag.
Lexie, who lives in Virginia, was getting ready for Capital Pride in Washington D.C, when she walked in on her gran pressing her bi flag – an action which felt particularly meaningful to her.
She tweeted: “I got up this morning to get ready for #DCPride. My grandma walked into my room, looked at my bi flag, and said, ‘Oh, this needs to be pressed out!’ Such a simple gesture, but it holds so much love and meaning for me.”
The young woman went onto explain it took “years” for her to tell her grandmother that she was bisexual.
Lexie posted: “It took me years to come out to her out of fear that she would see me differently, but nothing changed. She said, Okay, that’s fine.’ She taught me to love and accept all people, and she has always been supportive of me. [SIC]”
Since being posted three days ago, the touching tweet has racked up 33,000 retweets and 239,000 ‘likes’.
Highlighting how poignant it is to have the love and support of older relatives, one transgender man wrote: “so beautiful!! a lot of times ppl dont realize the most validating things are the little gestures. not long after i came out to my grandpa, we met up for a family dinner and he pulled me aside to give me a mens polo shirt hed bought for me while he was on a trip.
“It was way too big for me and very much not in style, but it meant he accepted me as a trans man and thats a memory that ill cherish forever [SIC]”
Another added: “I came out as nonbinary last year and told my grandparents about my pronouns. For my birthday, they called me and sang “Happy Birthday to They” and it was the sweetest thing. It’s so good to feel loved and seen.”
And a third joked: “For once I can like a story involving a relative trying to help someone be straight.”
Following the outpouring of love, Lexie shared a selfie with her and her grandma so everyone could see how beautiful she is.
She posted: “WOW this is blowing up so here’s another picture of my grandma because I want the world to see how beautiful she is! Show her some love! Happy pride y’all”.
