Woman accuses Sam Smith of ‘fat-shaming’ her on holiday
A woman has accused Sam Smith of “fat-shaming” her on holiday after he posted a video of her eating breakfast to his 9.5million Instagram followers.
Londoner Lauren Brooks was holidaying in California when the singer, 26, zoomed in on her breakfast and captioned it, “Good going”, while his boyfriend Brandon Flynn, 24, pulled a face.
And office worker Brooks has says his actions could have had “horrendous” consequences.
“It seems as if he is fat-shaming me for having such a big breakfast,” she told The Daily Star.
“He has 9.5million followers – and anyone who knew me and followed him would recognise me right away. Imagine if I was a girl who was even slightly insecure about her weight.
“To have a celeb mock her for eating a meal would be horrendous.”
However, Sam has denied he was doing anything of the sort, and he was in fact “jealous.”
Sam’s representative told Digital Spy: “Sam posted because he was jealous of her fabulous breakfast.”
The singer has previously revealed that he has a “constant battle” with food and shed a stone in two weeks after enlisting the help of a nutritional therapist.
And in April he told The Sun that he has quit alcohol in a bid to take care of his mental health after struggling with anxiety.
“My anxiety levels and mental health went through a shaky period at Christmas,” he said.
“But I’ve started meditating now, I am not drinking, I am trying to look after my mental health.
“Mental health issues are coming to the fore because people are starting to talk about it. So many people go through stuff. For me, my music has been my therapy.”
Explaining his decision to quit alcohol he said: “There were ups and downs. Burning is about feeling you are not in control.
“It’s about the self-destructive element — I was going out drinking way too much. Of course, you want to celebrate that these amazing things have happened but you can’t celebrate all the time.
“I’ve been completely off the booze for three weeks now. I never want to make promises but being sober is something I’m interested in.
“When I don’t drink and I’m not smoking cigarettes, when I’m completely clean, I feel so focused and happy.
“I don’t see myself drinking for the rest of the year because of the tour. I am more fun when off the booze — it’s nice. I am enjoying it now and we will see how it goes.”
