A Roseanne spinoff has been confirmed… starring everyone except racist Roseanne Barr
Weeks after Roseanne was cancelled, ABC has confirmed that the cast will be coming back to screens for a spinoff – well everyone except racist tweeter Roseanne Barr.
The new show will be called The Conners, and will focus on the family, who, “after a sudden turn of events, are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before”, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Debuting in the autumn, original cast members John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson and Michael Fishman are all returning, while other cast will be announced at a later date.
In a joint statement they said: “We have received a tremendous amount of support from fans of our show, and it’s clear that these characters not only have a place in our hearts, but in the hearts and homes of our audience.
“We all came back last season because we wanted to tell stories about the challenges facing a working-class family today. We are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter.”
When ABC axed Roseanne last month following the 65-year-old Trump supporter’s racist tweets, people were glad that a strong stand had been made, but concerned about the jobs of the rest of the cast and crew, however with 10 episodes being made, that appears to no longer be a concern.
Barr will have no creative input or gain financially, but she does retain rights to her own character and any future spinoffs and reboots.
Four weeks ago ABC decided to cancel the reboot of TV comedy series Roseanne after she made an “abhorrent” and “repugnant” statement likening Barack Obama’s former aide to a Planet of The Apes character.
Barr termed Obama’s aide Valerie Jarrett as the offspring of the “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes,” in the highly offensive tweet.
“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement, reported Variety.
Other tweets in the tirade claimed that Chelsea Clinton was married to one of George Soros’ nephews and called Hillary Clinton “a colostomy jug cuz full of shite.”
She was highly criticised for the tweets, and apologised and said that she would leave Twitter.
