Trump ally Tony Perkins says decriminalising homosexuality was ‘a mistake’
Evangelical Trump ally Tony Perkins has said it was a mistake to strike down sodomy laws that had criminalised homosexuality.
Perkins, who was recently appointed to serve as a United States Commissioner on International Religious Freedom by GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell, is the head of the anti-LGBT Family Research Council.
In a column on the FRC website on Thursday, Perkins lamented the signing of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, which was intended to end witch hunts against gay service personnel in the US armed forces, and the US Supreme Court’s 2003 ruling in Lawrence v. Texas, which struck down sodomy laws in fourteen states.
Perkins wrote: “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell [was] the first major crack in the foundation of marriage and human sexuality.
“Then, the next biggest shoe would drop — Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court ruling that struck down Texas’s ban on sodomy.
“The late Justice Antonin Scalia warned where their mistake would lead: ‘State laws against bigamy, same-sex marriage, adult incest, prostitution, masturbation, adultery, fornication, bestiality, and obscenity are likewise sustainable only in light of Bowers’ validation of laws based on moral choices. Every single one of these laws is called into question by today’s decision; the Court makes no effort to cabin the scope of its decision to exclude them from its holding.’
“With prophetic insight, he explained how six justices had just given the far-Left the only hammer they’d need to destroy thousands of years of human history.
“Anyone being intellectually honest knew this was where LGBT extremists were pushing America. Of course, for years the media laughed off groups like FRC who warned that the Left’s goal isn’t same-sex marriage but any kind of marriage.
“Establishment Republicans didn’t buy it, insisting there were plenty of laws on the books to keep the redefinition of marriage from happening.
“They were wrong. Three years since the decision that redefined marriage for America, the Left is still bulldozing their way through every possible social norm.
“The country finally realized – too late – that this isn’t about two people who love each other. It’s about obliterating every moral and cultural boundary humans have ever known.”
Perkins went on to suggest the LGBT rights movement will lead to paedophilia, claiming: “Once you’ve rejected basic biology and 2,000 years of civilization, there are no boundaries.”
The Trump administration has maintained close ties to Perkins despite the FRC’s extreme views and hate group designation.
The Family Research Council recently vowed to fight in court to keep details of its discussions with the Trump administration private – after a subpoena directed activists to turn over documents relating to its work on the transgender troop ban.
Perkins is alleged to have had input in a a White House policy document that made the case for banning transgender people from the military by citing transgender people’s “high rates of mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders” and “extremely high rates of suicidal ideation and other comorbidities.”
The document also claimed that “transition-related treatment is proving to be disproportionately costly.”
Leading medical and military experts came forward to deride the claims, with the American Medical Association stressing that there is “no medically valid reason to exclude transgender individuals from service.” Two former Surgeons General also rubbished the report.
It was recently revealed that Donald Trump’s former Chief Strategist Steve Bannon secretly corresponded with FRC activists.
Perkins has been condemned by the Jewish Anti-Defamation League in the past for repeatedly linking gay rights to the Holocaust and comparing gay people to Nazis.
Perkins insisted Christians are “going to find ourselves being loaded in cattle cars like it was when the Nazis took over before we realize we are in such terrible danger”.
He claims that Christians are being sent to “camps”, and that soon gays are “going to start rolling out the boxcars to start hauling off Christians”.
