Olivia Colman has said that having sex with Emma Stone on screen was “awfully fun.”

Stone agreed with Colman, who is set to take her bow in Netflix’s third and fourth seasons of The Crown as Queen Elizabeth II, adding that their raunchy scenes in upcoming film The Favourite were “really fun.”

The star-studded production is the latest in a series of lesbian films to come out in the past year, including Rafiki, which was banned in Nigeria because its director refused the censor’s request for its gay characters to show remorse.

The Favourite, which shows Stone’s Baroness Masham and Rachel Weisz’s Duchess of Marlborough as two cousins fighting for the affections of Colman’s Queen Anne, is due to come out later this year and also features Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alwyn and Mark Gatiss.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival today (August 30), Colman said: “It’s as though we think we invented sex, but we didn’t, it’s been going on for quite a long time,” according to Reuters.

“And it was awfully fun having sex with Emma Stone,” added the Golden Globe-winning actress.

“It was really fun having sex with you too,” responded Stone.

The Academy Award winner later clarified: “We didn’t really!”

The Favourite is Weisz’s second appearance in a lesbian love story this year, after she starred in Disobedience, which depicted a forbidden romance between two Jewish women.

Weisz defended her explicit sex scene with Rachel McAdams in the film, calling it “beautiful,” and explaining that “usually there’s little point to sex scenes, but in our story it’s a love scene that’s about freedom.”

Next year also promises to feature plenty of excellent lesbian stories on your screen, with Netflix’s First Ladies set to come out in 2019.

The film will show Jennifer Aniston playing Beverly Nicholson, the history-making first lesbian US President, as she moves into the White House with her wife Kasey, played by Tig Notaro.

Netflix has positioned itself as one of the best outlets for LGBT+ representation, with numerous queer storylines in – for instance – Orange is the New Black, Riverdale and the upcoming Super Drags.

It has also been a launchpad for queer figures like Hannah Gadsby and her incredible show Nanette – even if the streaming service did erase seasons 2-7 of RuPaul’s Drag Race earlier this year.
