Rapper makes gay porn film to celebrate his 40th birthday… in his parents’ house

A Canadian rapper and record producer has made his own gay porn film—and filmed the whole thing in his parents’ house while they were away on holiday.
Joshua Dolgin, whose stage name is Socalled, kept his plans from his parents and only told them after he had finished shooting.

The openly gay artist told Vice that the film was “in part” a reaction to turning 40, but added that he didn’t think of it as a “mid-life crisis movie,” but rather as a “mid-life celebration.”
“I love sex and I love great photography and film, so this is a combination of the two. I’m blessed as an artist, because I have enough of a name that I can try new things, but I’m not so famous that I have limits.”
“I just want to pursue my passions. This is part of that,” he added.
The idea came about after he met gay porn star River Wilson on Grindr. They decided to go to the cinema together and “really connected.”
“We both felt like it’d be a great idea to make a porn movie together. Not just any porn movie, but one that looks beautiful, in which the images have some integrity.”
“I think people who make pornography have a responsibility.”

The result is an arthouse and independent gay porn film called The Housesitter, which is set to premiere at the Pop Montreal cultural festival.
In his wide-ranging interview with Vice, the performer also spoke about how he doesn’t actually like porn, and said most of it is “boring and repetitive.”
He saw his opportunity to make the film after he learned that his parents would be away for at least a month during the winter. He wrote a script for the film and also cast German porn star Valentin Braun to appear alongside Wilson in the film.

He said his parents are “super cool about everything” so he wasn’t too concerned about their reactions to finding out that he had made a porn film in their house.
However, he says the news is “still sinking in” with his father.
Socalled is best known for his eclectic mix of hip hop and other styles including folk music. He was the subject of a documentary in 2010 called The “Socalled” Movie.
